129 Map WEST INDIES SOUTH COAST OF CUBA SANTIAGO HARBOR (Updated) from a Survey by U. S. S. Yankton in 1899
Hydrographic Office Navy Department 1935
This is a large nautical survey map titled West Indies South Coast of Cuba Santiago Harbor. It is based on the survey by the U. S. S. Yankton in 1899 (stated in the title) , updated to 1935 as stamped in faint purple ink as follows: "Corrected through notice to Mariners No 2. Jan 8 35 Hydrographic Office Navy Department". "Edition: 18th, Nov. 1935" is printed just below the neat line at the lower left. Map number 1856 50 cents. There is also a stamp outside the border on the left bottom corner "C. S. Hammond & Co / 20 Church St, New York, N. Y. / Map Specialists" - this may have belonged to Hammond (publishers) or the map may have printed at Hammond. This is a vertical map with the western portion of the Santiago in the upper right corner. The map coverage extends to the left to include Miradero Bay. It extends south to include Socapa Bat(tery) and Morro Castle. The map has been printed on very heavy paper (antique white) with black ink. It is 42" high x 30 " wide at the neat line. All four margins are about 1 ". The map has four folds comprising 16 panels. Each panel is approximately 10" high x 7" wide. The paper is very clean on the image side - only one small light thumb size smudge mark. No user writing, no tears, no punctures, no stains except as defined here: The reverse side (which is blank) has some darkening at some of the folds and at the tips of some edges and some darkening about " in from the the edge of the upper left corner . There is a faint wrinkle in the paper about 1/3 from the left that runs vertically in the map - it is not that visible to the eye on the image side - it is easier to see if the map is turned to pick up the light at the right angle. Well cared for except for the darkening of some of the folds on the back side. The words 'Santiago de Cuba' have been written in ink on the reverse side (to avoid opening the map to identify it) . The weight of the paper will create a challenge if the map is framed; the paper folds will have to be straightened to make the map lie flat - with weight or a warm iron. The map will be shipped folded (as it is now) with packaging that will protect the map and not crush or put pressure on the folds. ; .
