This is a First Edition by Macmillan hardcover book in a questionable dust jacket. The book is in very good condition - tight, bright, crisp clean in a royal blue cloth cover. Sturdy binding - just a hint of light wear at the top and bottom of the spine. The front end papers have a former owner book plate with name and the name of a lake in Minnesota, plus a hand writtent date. The adjacent free end paper has a matching signature by the same former owner, plus a date in green ink. There is a hint of a former price erasure. There are no other marks or writing. The interior pages are all crisp and tight. The jacket is may be a piece of decorative paper or a special addition by the publisher. There is a repetetive design that looks like it could be a logo - two birds facing each other with a letter "N" showing between them on two of the logos. The color is green and off-white. It is quite old with browing on the inside and a little corner wear. The title of the book is typed and adhered to the spine with an adhesive. The jacket could be hand-made or not. It is now protected in a new, archival, see-through and removable mylar cover. Ernestine (Rossler) Schumann-Heink's first professional appearance in opera was in 1877.; 8vo; 390 pages

1292 Le Duc, William G. (Letter) and Hughes, Thomas (Book) ALS AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY WILLIAM G. LEDUC AND THE Book OLD TRAVERSE DES SIOUX

SIGNED. This item is a combination of a signed letter-note by Le Duc, plus a book containing chapters written by LeDuc. The author and compiler of the book was Thomas Hughes) . This ALS of (Brigadier General) William G. Le Duc is separate from the book, but came with the book. Part 5 of the book contains an account of the negotiations and treating signing at the Old Traverse de Sioux by LeDuc. He was in attendance at the 1851 Treaty. An account of it was included in a series of books that Le Duc compiled and published in 1851/2/ 3 - the Minnesota Handbook. The letter is dated in 1913. It contains a request from Theodore G. Carter of St. Peter, MN. Both had served in the Civil War. Carter asked Le Duc to help locate a copy of the 1852 Minnesota Yearbook edition. Le Duc replied on the reverse side of the request in pencil. He wrote one paragraph stating that it would be impossible (in spite of an offer to lure an owner of the yearbook into a trade for a first edition of Captain Cooks Journal of a Last Voyage. LeDuc signed his note, then added a paragraph stating that he found several copies of the 1853 edition would send one. He also writes that a map of the Minnesota River was made from a survey LeDuc made on the deck of the Yankton in July of 1850. The request letter was addressed to Le Duc at his address in Hastings, MN. Le Duc was, during his lifetime, a lawyer, bookseller, publisher, historian-compiler, bridge and railway developer, town planner, miller, Quartermaster/Brigadier General in the Civil War, friend of Sherman and was with Sherman in Atlanta and spent many years as U. S. Commissioner of Agriculture appointed by President Hayes. He was recognized as a humanitarian for efforts and negotiations during the Atlanta and Georgia campaign. The letter is on letter size paper with one horizontal and two vertical fold marks. The paper is toned, There is a Carter signature in ink. Le Duc's penciled reply takes up 1/3 of the paper on the reverse. The book cover is paper stock and shows some wear. There is corner wear and the bottom rear corner is chipped as is the rear blank page. The front blank paper is missing the bottom edge for about one inch. There is a missing corner to the frontispiece which is in color. There are about five more pages with the lower corners missing. The interior pages are clean. Line drawings, map, and half tone portrait photographs. (Letter signed by Le Duc. ); 8vo; 178 pages

The covers are 3/4 maroon morocco leather with maroon and dark maroon-black marbled papers. There are six compartments with raised bands an the title and author stampled in and filled with gilt. Marbled end papers in a creem and reddish-marron. The original book is in spring green art paper with the title page printed on the cover and repeated inside the book. No date is mentioned, this book appears to have a photogravure by Rajon and not an etching on the frontipiece. There is a book plate of a former owner laid in - not glued. It belonged to a former Ambassador to France (from Eastern Europe) . The bookplate is nicely designed and printed. The leather binding is in very good plus to near fine condition. There is a very slight touch of wear to the corners. Clean, crisp, with a tight binding. There are no marks or writing. The covers of the wrappers are quite clean as are the interior pages.
