1844 Saxby, Edward] Col. Titus, Alias William Allen KILLING NO MURDER, ORIGINALLY APPLIED TO OLIVER CROMWELL A Discourse Proving it Lawful to Kill a Tyrant According to the Opinion of the Most Celebrated Ancient Authors.
London Re-Printed For The Great Grandson Of Algernon Sydney 1775 Hardcover
SIGNATURES. This is a bound pamphlet published in or around 1775. The publisher information lacks a date. It states "London. Printed in the Year, 1656, and Re-Printed for the Great Grandson of Algernon Sidney" . This book has a letter pasted in on the verso of the second binders blank on the letterhead of the Bodleian Library and signed A. Cowley. The letter is typed and signed in ink. "My dear Lord Aldenham, We have done our best to find out something about your copy of "Killing no Murder: , but as a matter of fact we can say no more about it than you already know. It is not in the British Museum, nor here, nor in any of the other catalogues we have examined, and it is not mentioned by Lowndes. We can only return it to you with a confession of being defeated, and I hope that some light may be found some day. It is certainly a curiosity. Yours sincerely, " Cowley sig. The letter is dated July 14, 1925. Adjacent to the letter is the recto of the blank of the pamphlet or its wrapper (as bound) . At the top of the page someone has written "Killing no Murder" and there are initials "E. C. " Below that, In the middle of the page is a different handwriting with the signature "V. Gibbs". Below that in a different handwriting and ink for this paragraph: "This book belonged to Mrs Barrett (? ) Hagley (? ) Grandaughter of Sir Vicary Gibbs. At her death it was sent to my brother Herbert who gave it to me. Aldenham" The verso is blank. Title page and blank verso; Advertisement by editor and blank verso; Pages 1-59 and blank verso; Wrapper leaf (or blank) leaf. Two binder blanks. The first and last page of the pamplet (with signatures and blank at the rear) appear to have taken more soil or were added as a wrapper from a different supply used for the content. The 'wrapper' paper (laid) appears to have been used before. There is a faint appearance of handwriting, not offset from the book as bound. This same vestige of writing appears on the rear wrapper (blank) , also . The paper used for the remainder of the pamphlet (laid) is less coarse and untrimmed at the edges except the top edges which are gilt. There are some ink spots, a bottom fore-edge stain to the wrapper with the corner is lost. The cover is a handsome binding of 3/4 leather and marbled paper with title in gilt on the spine. Unfortunately, the front cover is detached and an inch of leather on the spine is missing at both ends, otherwise, there is only a little modest edge wear and a spot on the rear bottom leather. There are some former (inventory) codes and prices in pencil on the front end paper. ; 8vo; Former 475
