34 Blackwell, B. H. THE BOOK OF THE HORACE CLUB 1898 - 1901
Oxford, England B. H. Blackwell 1901 First Edition Hardcover Signed by Author
SIGNED. This is a flexible, semi-hard cover book of poetry with initials of the contributors who were "not only Heads and Bursars, but Proessors of this or that University, Presidents of the Union, journalists, novelists, divines, scholars" (from Oxford magazine Vol.19.) . The publisher was B. H. Blackwell. There is a folded note laid in with no signature, but with the statement "with the Author's Complements 16 Oct 1906". The note paper is stamped in purple ink - "Reform Club Pall Mall S. W. ". The referenced author might have been Blackwell, or one of the contributors, or it could be a misfit to the book. An H. B. Is listed as a contributor. The book is a mottled beige with a title in gilt on the front cover and a decorative urn in gilt - the urn image was considered a 'religious object' of the club. The fronts of the covers have a yap edge (slightly extended and turned in (by design) . The book is hand-set by Horace Hart, Printer. The title page is set in red and black ink. The copyright page indicates that 500 copies were printed. This book is not numbered, but there is no indication in this book that there was a numbering scheme for the 500. The 'H. B. ' as a contributor could have been H. Belloc based on a note in pencil on the front pasted down end paper that has this note - " Anthology. Contrib. By Belloc and Buchanen. Ltd to 500 copies. There are no other marks or writing. The book is clean and in very good condition. There is a faint hint of bumping to the corners - perhaps from a slight pulling of the paper at the corners. There is a touch of foxing on the end papers. The interior pages are clean and crisp. There is a see-through, removable mylar cover over the covers for protection. May be removed. ; 8vo; Signed by Author
