34 Figaro (Fleuriot, Jerome Charlemagne - Marquis De Langle) THE NOVELTIES OF A YEAR AND A DAY IN A SERIES OF PICTURESQUE LETTERS ON THE CHARACTERS, MANNERS, AND CUSTOMS OF THE SPANISH, FRENCH, AND ENGLISH NATIONS ; INTERSPERSED WITH REAL ANECDOTES /
London 1785 First Edition Hardcover
This is an ex-library hardcover book with leather and marbled papers, published in 1785. It is written in the form of letters written to his wife and others. The letters are written on the culture and practices of the people in three countries - from Spain to France to England. The book binding would have been impressive if not marked on the spine with call letters in white ink, then covered with what appears to be shellac. The taupe 3/4 colored leather is handsome and the marbled papers are a perfect match of style - same tones and color. Laid paper used throughout. There is a library reference book plate is on the front pasted down end paper, The name of the library is perforated on the front free end paper, the blank, and the title page. There are a few stamps throughout the text and the name of the library is stamped on the bottome edges, The page eges are marbled. The end papers have a neat line of offsetting (shadow transfer) from the leather of the cover. The interior pages are crisp and clean with a sizable font and ample ink. Someone has drawn faint lines under ome of the text with pencil. The interior front end paper has separated, but is now repaired. The binding is tight. The corners of the book are worn and the rear, bottom corner book board is showing. Would have been a quite handsome book, if not for the markings, especially for the design on the spine, now flawed by call numbers. In English. ; 8vo; 222 pages
