26 NEW YORK (VICTORIAN PHOTO ALBUM VIEW BOOK)
Flexible covers
This is a photographic gift book of New York. There are 62 small photographs of scenes in New York that look like photographs, but many are photographs of prints which has been reworked to look like glossy photos. They have been printed in a rich sepia toned ink. The images are of various places, buildings, and landmarks in the horse and buggy days as well as elevated railroads. The opening photo is a miniature bird's eye view of Manhatten with Brooklyn and New Jersey spread across both pages - tiny, but clear. There are sailing and steam ships on the rivers. The look of New York of that period is captured and the variety of photos is encompassing - Cotton Exchange, Hebrew Orphan Asylum, High Curve Elevated Railroad, Grand Central Depot. The cover is a finely pebbled cloth - tan brown with a subtlely blind-stamped floral bouquet design and a banner title with the title New York and a sillouette of the Statue of Liberty. The gilt that was once on the cover has faded. The covers are thin. There is edge wear and a touch of soil. The interior is clean and bright. And without wear. The pages are in a folding accordian display. There is dime size damage on two pages (both sides of a double spread) where the pages stuck and the top layer of ink has lifted. The 62 images are on 12 pages with 3 to 6 photos to a page. It's a charming booklet. There is no publishing history. ; 8vo

It appears that there are supposed to be 9 pages at the rear titled "CUT-UPS FOR GROWN-UPS" Holman invites the owner of the book to do crazy little things some based on the characters in the strip. They are printed on both sides of the page. This former owner took him up on it and did cut some. Two pages being complete. , Two are missing one quarter of the page. One page was torn out and the remnants of that page are present. All the 56 pages of the black and white cartoons are present. The pages in the interior are all in near fine condition (except as satted, the cut-outs which are unrealted to the comic strips on the other pages) The end papers are clean with no marks or writing, but the fragile paper split at the interior hinges, both front and back - it was brittle and inflexible. The binding is in excellent condition. The binding is tight and sturdy. The white background of the front cover is very clean. There is a touch of wear at the corners.
