New York, NY Living Art 1929 First Edition Softcover Illustrated by J. Matulka 
This is a softcover book published in 1929 by Gustave Leopold Van Roosbroeck (in English) with illustrations by Jan Matulka. The main story is Grotexques. There are three other short stories - Three Fables for the Children of Tomorrow: Judas' Revenge; The Powder of Eternal Life; How Don Quixote was Defeated in Moronia. Each story ends in a Moral. The binding is tight and the pages are crisp and clean. The paper cover was fragile and has been roughed up in the form of many mostly small chips and wear to the yap edges -paper extending beyong the pages (text block) . There is some paper missing at the bottom of the spine and a corner is missing on the rear bottom. Clean. Matulka (1890-1972) Born Prague, moved to New York, studied in Paris - taught at the Art Students League in New York. The illustrations are black and white line drawings in an abstract form. Five full page, blank on the verso. ; 16mo; 104 pages

This is a hardcover book with 1/2 leather and marbled boards. The edges are also marbled. The yellow-creme coated end papers are clean and without writing or plates, however the first end paper is missing. The half -title page shows some wear; the remaining pages are quite clean and crisp. There are two pages of finely written notes bound or glued in. The writing is a small, fine script in brown ink on pale blue paper. The covers are worn at the corners, but nicely polished. The marbled paper show some wear on the four and bottom edges..onpaper ; 8vo

There is some sunning to the cloth on the spine and at the tip of the top edges. There is a slight touch of wear to the threads at the corners. , There is a faint water line at the top edge of the first two pages, the tinted top edges are without spots. Tight hinges, clean end papers and pages. Fore and bottom edges are untrimmed. A story without text told in images through the author's art through woodcuts. Some pages are printed in black, others in terra cotta. ; A novel told in images without text from woodcut art by Ward. ; 8vo

Tight, clean hardback book rebound in maroon leather using spine title and front cover pictorial from original book, neatly applied. A horizontal line/portion of the back cover is slightly darker than the rest of the leather. It estends around to the front, but less noticeably. There is some rubbing on the leather surface - both front and back. The covers and spine are straight with no other signs of wear. Tight hinges, clean end papers and pages. Black end papers with no writing. The first blank page has a former owner gift note and date neatly and cleverly written. The book's story is told in the image of the art. Printed in black and terra cotta ink. ; 8vo

This is a hardcover book without a jacket, but with a see-through, removable archival cover. Small, paper boards, 1904, 236 pages. The text block page edges are deckled (untrimmed) . The tips of the edges are lightly darker than the paper. There are to two small offset shadows from two small paper items that were once laid in (one at page 53 with the shadow also on the adjacent blank, the other at the end of the book at the page with the Mosher mark and limited edition information) . The edges show a slight discoloration due to age. The spine and boards are tight and clean. There is a tiny nick in the paper covering at the top of the front cover near the spine. There is a slight change of paper color to the covers near the spine - a faint darkening. The bottom of the spine has a curve inward and a tiny tear. The end papers and pages are clean. No marks or writing. There is a touch of foxing on the reverse side of the first title. This is one of 600 unnumbered copies. Printed on Van Gelder handmade paper. This book has four essays: The Decay of Lying; Pen, Pencil, and Poison; The Critic as Artist, parts I and II; and The Truth of Masks. Well cared for book. ; Small 8vo; 237 pp. pages
