The covers are bright, crisp, clean in near fine condition. There is a former owner bookplate on inside end paper. The end papers are otherwise crisp, clean with no marks or writing. The interior pages are also clean and crisp. No wear or soil. The dust jacket is quite bright and clean. The background is white and bright on the front cover of the jacket. The rear has a fine scratch, barely visible. There is small, slight chipping at the corners. Unclipped - the original price is present. Well cared for. The jacket is in a new, archival, see-through, removable mylar protector. Cover art by Eldon Dedini - design has become famous over the years. The jacket is now protected in a new archival see-through, removable mylar cover. The book is illustrated by Antonio Frasconi. There are notes in the rear of the book that explains the illustrations - originally done in woodcuts. The color throughout the book is a magenta-purple, orange, brown-orange, black. This is the First American Edition of The Lord of the Rings in hardcover with dust jackets, published by Houghton Mifflin and Company in New York in 1954, '55, '56 for the three volume set, respectively. The Fellowship of the RIng, Two Towers, The Return of the Ring. EDITIONS: Volumes 1 and 3 are both First Impressions of the First Editions and Volume 2 is the Second Impression of the First Edition. The same sequence is true for the matching dust jackets ---First - Second - First Impression dust jackets for the three Volume set) . (Impressions = printings) . All the books and jackets match identification points based on Hammond/Anderson and Skull/Frisby. CONDITION: Between the six items being offered for sale (three books, three jackets) , the condition is good to near fine. The book for Volume 3 is in the best condition, but the jacket for Volume 3 has the highest occurrences of wear.. BOOKS: The books have bright, medium blue cloth covers with tight bindings, a touch of thread wear at some corners. None have any marks or writing on the end paper or pages. The pages are crisp and clean. There is a little spotting to the top and bottom edges on the first volume. The blue covers and gilt are the brightest on Volume 3. JACKETS: The jackets appear to be the original jackets issued with the books - all points of identifications show continuity throughout. None of the jackets have been price clipped. There is some edge and corner wear to each, a tiny puncture, some rubbing, one has a little discoloration, another has some crease marks, one has some mending tape in the interior. Separate detail on each book and jacket is available. MAPS: Each volume has a map - all maps are present and attached and in fine condition - they also match the points of identification for each volume. ; 8vo

This is the original printing of the excerpt from the December 1968 Life Magazine publication. This is not the 2002 book. This excerpt is 15 pages of text and a cover with a photograph of Twain. There is art illustration throughout in black and whte and some in color tints by JamesMcMullen, illustrator and artist. This excerpt was taken from the magazine. The unfinished work was printed on regular paper instead of magazine paper. It has become a beige color with darker toning on the front vertical edge and a little on the other edges. It has a stapled binding. It is very clean and crisp with no marks or writing, marks, or wear. This excerpt comes with a two page article (on magazine paper with another photo of Twain) by Walter Blair with two titles: "An unpublished manuscript- American Fiction's most famous boys set off on a wild adventure they never finished" and "The reasons Mark Twain did not finish his story. " First written in 1885, Twain stopped writing in the middle of a sentence. This manuscript stops at that point. Blair explains. Later, in 2002, author Lee Nelson received permission to finish the book. This is the original excerpt only, plus the two page article by Blair, not the Nelson book. The rest of the magazine is not included. The total number of pages are 18. The two pages by Blair are clean with no marks or writing. There is a soft crease on one corner and faint toning (white to beige) at the edges. ; 4to; 15 pages

There are three other short stories - Three Fables for the Children of Tomorrow: Judas' Revenge; The Powder of Eternal Life; How Don Quixote was Defeated in Moronia. Each story ends in a Moral. The binding is tight and the pages are crisp and clean. The paper cover was fragile and has been roughed up in the form of many mostly small chips and wear to the yap edges -paper extending beyong the pages (text block) . There is some paper missing at the bottom of the spine and a corner is missing on the rear bottom. Clean. Matulka (1890-1972) Born Prague, moved to New York, studied in Paris - taught at the Art Students League in New York. The illustrations are black and white line drawings in an abstract form.
