This is a handsome, well cared for collection of music and essays related to the South during the Civil War. It is book form with a pocket for an LP bound in. The book and performance was produced by Goddard Lieberson. The music was performed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. Bales Conducted. The voices were members of the Cantata Choir of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation. The Narrator during the performance was Rev. Edmund Jennings Lee. Catton and Dowdey wrote essays. The book has been well cared for. The binding is a taupe color cloth with a highly gilded and embosssed title and images surrounding an image of the Confederate flag in red, white, and blue. There is a light bump to the front upper corner and a few spots where the color of the cloth has slightly faded. Very clean and crisp with a straight, clean spine. There are no marks or writing on the clean end pages. There are many illustrations in black and white The two essays follow an Introduction by Lieberson. Catton - , The Confederate Legend . Dowdey - Lee at Appomattox. Bales - The Songs and Their Origins. Short bios of Bales, Catton, Dowdey, and Lee complete the book.. Each section is divided by a glassine, see-through paper - all in crisp condition. The LP (by Columbia) is in a stiff paper pocket. The vinyl appears to be in fine condition - perhaps unplayed? The tip the pocket holding the LP has some discoloring. Gift condition except for the slight corner bump and touch of fading on the cover. 12 1/2" tall x 14 inches wide x 1" thick. A nice production. ; 4to
