This is a hardcover book published in 1886. The survey to consider It is comprised of a letters between the Secretary of the Navy and Congress, 41 pages of text, a table of Estimates of Cost, a Letter from the Director of the Geological Survey, J. W. Powell, Table of Contents/Index, and 12 fold-out maps and 56 plates. (One of the fold-out maps is contained within the text. ) The plates are scenes originally engraved on wood and copied for the book. The binding is a dark brown cloth, the binding is tight with a little wear to the corners. The gilt title on the spine is still quite readable. The end papers are in place and without any marks or writing. There is a slight reinforcement of the top and bottom of the end papers from the rear side of the paper. There is a little darkening to the edges of the pages. The maps are near pristine except for a very narrow line of page darkening wherever a fold in the map was at the edges of the pages - the page edges darkened by exposure to the environment over time. Most of the maps are quite large and it could be said that this book wasn't used much, if at all. Map 1 has one fold that has a crease parallel to the actual fold line with a 1/2 inch tear, now reinforced with Japanese tissue tape. Otherwise the maps are very clean and crisp. There are occasional tiny spots on the plates, but no tears or chips. Well cared for. Tall , wide, over an inch thick. Could require extra postage if shipped internationally. ; 4to
