There are biographical sketches and portraits of those featured. This is a heavy, thick book - the cost of shipping by air should be reviewed before ordering. The binding is strong, covers intact, and the book appears to have been rebound at one time in strong blue library cloth. There is some wear and fraying at the top or the spine. There are some call numbers on the spine, stamping on the bottom edge, a library book plate, pin point punctures spelling out the library name on some beginning pages, and some library numbers on the copyright page. The pages are clean . The tissue guards over the portraits are in good condition. There is some smudging on the end papers, but the interior pages are generally clean. The book is 1/2 leather and cloth. The book is illustrated with many black and white as well as color in-text illustrations, plus many full page chromolithograph images in color and some in black and white. The cover is very good except there is some wear at the top of the spine, the top edge has been chipped. It would have been a fine example of making a spine for a book - divided into six compartments with decorative blind stamp design and neat gilt titles. There is a half dime size nick in the cover at the lower from edge. The front interior hinge (gutter) paper is broken, but repaired. The binding is tight . The end papers are coated green and there are no marks or writing on them. THere is a former owner name neatly written on the front blank paper. The interior pages are very clean and crisp. The books were printed in Holland. This English version was publshed by Bonnist International, Ltd and distributed by Brockway Glass Company in the U. S. G. A. Mengle and F. B Hess of Brockway are featured on one page as sponsors of the publication. The Introduction in in English and the remainder of each book is filled with (nearly all) color photos of images involving medicine - a statue of St. Damian, patron saint of pharmacists, paintings of doctor offices, house calls, pharmacies (apothecary shops) , prints of medicinal botanicals, images from manuscripts, medicine vendors, medicinal pottery, dispensaries, antique bowls, wooden drug containers with Coats of Arms, symbolic art, famlus doctors from paintings. There are about 42 images per volume. These images were used in the Netherlands Pharmaceutical Calendar. The books are bound in a handsome maroon cloth with gilt titles on the cover and spine. The books are in fine condition - well cared for. Tight binding, clean crisp covers, clean end papers and pages. No marks or writing. Each book was originally published at a different time. These U. S. Editions were bound in different years, but the bindings are identical. Book 1 is the fourth edition (1965) , Book 2 is the second edition (1965) , Book 3 is the first edition (1966) . The images in each book are arranced chronologic ally within each volume. Each image is accompanied by a paragraph of background information and a caption in Dutch, German, French, and English.
