ORIGINAL ART - GOUACHE PAINTING OF YOUNG GIRLS SINGING By Leo Politi, Politi, Leo
17 Politi, Leo ORIGINAL ART - GOUACHE PAINTING OF YOUNG GIRLS SINGING By Leo Politi

Signed and dated 1942. This is a gouache painting by Leo Politi, artist, author, and illustrator, known for his stories in writing and depictions in art of the young children and their parents and culture in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles. This painting is of three young girls singing. The girl in the center is holding a (song? ) book and the eyes of all three are lowered or closed as if following from the book or singing from memory. They all have long sleeve blouses and skirts and are wearing sandals. Completed in reds and neutrals - no background scene. The medium to deep reds and neutrals are vibrant and intense. Signed and dated 1942 in the upper right corner. This painting was previously framed and there is what appears to be a burn mark at what was, most likely, the frame opening which is 10 7/8" high x 9 7/8" wide. There is a pencil border drawn beyond that at 11 " high x 10 1/8" wide. The outside dimensions of the paper are 15 " high x 11 7/8" wide. This print has been professionally top hinged and matted using archival materials to fit an 18' x 14' frame (frame not included) . No other glue was used in matting, however, there are remnants of glue at the edges of the watercolor paper, most likely from the original old framing job. There may have been an original wash for the background of a faint, light green, which has turned a rich, solid beige which is very complimentary to the colors in the painting. The image is modest and charming. There is a half circle indent in the paper near the foot of the girl on the right. The print is clean and without soil or stains. The matboard has been precisely cut, workmanship is professionally fine, the camera work is imperfect. ; .

FLAGS IN AMERICA'S HISTORY A Complete 1944 Art Calendar. (Not a Book), Wyeth, N. C.
19 Wyeth, N. C. FLAGS IN AMERICA'S HISTORY A Complete 1944 Art Calendar. (Not a Book)
1944
This is a 1944 calendar of twelve prints by N. C Wyeth in wall form. This item contains all twelve months. It was designed for marketing purposes for the John Morrell Company of Ottumwa, Iowa. The prints are large images of events in U. S. History related to flags. They are bound by a metal clamp about 1/4" on the front and back side. The original hanging hook is still a part of the metal clamp - it can be turned up for hanging of turned down to place it out-of-sight. All prints are intact. They are in good condition. There is no hint that the calenar was used - in other words there are no fold or roll marks to indicate that the pages were turned over. However, the days of the week were not printed or were cut off. The name of the month and year is the last line at the bottom of each calendar page. The images represent: The Viking Flag, The Royal Standard of Spain (Columbus discovery) , The Bunker Hill Flag, The Grand Union Flag, The First Stars and Stripes, U. S. Army National Colors, The Star-Spangled Banner, The U. S. Coast Guard Flag, The Alamo Flag, The Fremont Flag (the pathfinder of discovery) , The Confederate Battle Flag, The Stars and Stripes of Today. Each image is bordered and titled. Below the title of each flag is background in text and a small image of the look of the flag - since the flag in the art might be furled. There is some rusting of the metal on the right side. The paper is clean except for one spot on the reverse of the last page. There is a faint ripple to the paper that is not that visible on the printed side. It is more noticeable from the rear of the paper and closest to the metal. It is NOT from moisture, it might be from rolling or light mishandling of the soft paper the images were printed on over years. The calendar is flat - it appears that is was not stored in rolled form. There is a touch of wear at the bottom corners and tiny creases to the first page. The top edge is firmly held by the metal. . There is a faint discoloration on the first page (only) on the bottom right - it is more noticeable in the margin. The paper size is approximately 19 " high x 14" wide. ; 19"H x 14"W
