Bomberger, A W. (Augustus Wight) GENERALS AND BATTLE OF THE CIVIL WAR Canton, OH Chisholm Bros. 1891 First Edition Hardcover This is a hardcover book of 28 pages of photos and 20 pages of text. The photos are in a beautiful sepia glossy finish. The text is a non-alphabetical Appendix containing a paragraph or more about the generals and battles. Some of the photos are full page, others contain multiple photos. Some are recognizable - for example, some are photo reproductions of classic portrait paintings. Others are images from the news outlets and books of the times. There is one or two sentences (or a paragraph or list) explaining the image at the bottom of the page. The page count of 48 includes the first and last which are pasted to the inside book covers in place of the usual end papers. The photos are arranged in fold-out accordian style. The text pages open up and down, rather than left and right. Some are loose. , The covers are a dark grey-green cloth with blind-stamped (reverse embossing) filled with gilt. There is a fancy decorative border and title (also in gilt) on the front cover. The contents are in clean and mostly in unworn condition. There are papers inserted between facing photos to keep the photos from sticking to each other. This method has worked, but the buffer sheets are worn because of the fragile paper used. Since the design of the book is fold-outs, there is no typical binding. The book has been handled with care and should last another 100 years if handled with equal care. The value of this book(let) is mostly the striking images as well as the covers and Civil War collector interest. Hard-to-find. ; Oblong 8vo; 48 pages
