5 Lockhart, J. G. (editor) ANCIENT SPANISH BALLADS; HISTORICAL AND ROMANTIC (Lockhart's Spanish Ballads)
London John Murray 1841 Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket Illustrated by Owen Jones
Hardcover book in ribbed cloth with gilt design. Published in 1841 as a new, revised edition. Beautifully illustrated with arabesque borders, vignettes, and full plate chromolithograph designs by Owen Jones with heavily inked color and gilt. Other illustrations are in wood engravings and lithograph by William Allan, David Roberts, WIlliam SImson, Henry Warren, C. E. Aubrey, William Harvey. A delightful introduction to Spanish literature and folklore. This work is mentioned in the book Victorian Book Design by Ruari McLean . This is considered one of the finest and earliest gift books. Lockhart was a Scottish novelist, biographer, and editor and is known for his work related to Scott and Burns. Some of the pages with chromolithographs have started to fox at the fore-edge (foxed - small brown spots, an acidic reaction from impurities in the paper or from the environment) . The color of the cloth has been reapplied and the top and bottom of the spine has been reinforced with perfectly matching colored archival material. Clean end papers. ; 4to
