There is a photo portrait of Birge as a frontispiece. President Dystra and others honored Birge. Tight, bright, clean and without wear or marks.; 8vo; 48 pages

2 MERCK'S 1901 MANUAL OF THE MATERIA MEDICA A Ready Reference Pocket Book for the Practicing Physician and Surgeon Containing Names and Chief Synonyms (Continued)

This is a small hardcover book, the second edition, of the Merck Materia Medica, published and printed in 1901. The book has a dark brown cloth cover. The book appears to have been bound upside down. The front cover is blank and the back cover has the Merck's 1901 Manual blind-stamped (reverse embossing) and the words "Property of Hospital Library" is blind-stamped and filled with a copper shade of gilt. The end papers are a pale light green with an advertisement from Merck for subscription to a journal, a place for an owner name (presently blank) and another ad for Merck's 'Analyses' Laboratory with a list of types of material they analyzed, plus the price. The reverse side of the front free end paper has an image of the Merck Building at University Place in New York. The rear pasted down end paper has a bird's eye view rendering of the Laboratories and Works in Darmstadt. The free end paper has a list of some Awards to Merck Products and a note to doctors about recognizing the label Merck uses on its products and cautions doctors to reject products not bearing their label. The last ten pages are advertisements for various products. The book is divided in four parts: Materica Medica (with the first appearance of 'aspirin' named by Bayer approximately two years earlier) ; Approved Formulas; Classification of Medicaments; Miscellany. There is a list of Abbreviations and various extra lists, tables, or paragraphs - Relation of Pulse and Temperatures, Obstetric Calendar, Pulse of Different Ages, Respiration of Different Ages, Metric System, many tables of metric measure; Eruptive Fevers. The book has a tight binding, clean covers, but with some corner wear. The pages are all clean and crisp, one page has a crease. There are no marks or writing - there are NO other signs indicating that this book was from a library - perhaps it was intended for a Hospital, but was rejected or held back. It has been well cared for. (The first edition was 192 pages, two years later, the reference grew to 282 pages. ) Continuation of the sub-title: ........ Physical Form and Appearance, Solubilities, Percentage Strengths and Physiological Effects, Therapeutic Uses, Modes of Administration and Applications, Regular and Maximum of Dosage, Incompatibles, Antidotes, Precuationary Requirements, Etc. Etc, of the Chemicals and Drugs usual in modern medical practice; - a comprehensive collection of prescriptions, embracing also the newer remedies of established merit; - a classification of mendicants; - and miscellany, comprising poisoning and its treatment. Metric system, and tables, Etc. ; 12mo; 282 pages

This is flexible hardcover book bound in a dark gray cloth. There are letters in gilt ink on the front - a litte dulled. This a library edition with modest markings. There are two blind (no ink) embossed characters with the name of a College on the title pagea the last page. There is a checkout form and a pocket in the rear of the book (no one signed it out on the slip that is present) . There is a tiny stamp that says 'stacks' just above a former owner book plate with a name printed on it which is on the front pasted down end paper. The binding is tight, the pages are clean and crisp. The bottom corners are slightly bumped. There are no other marks or writing. Well cared for. There are four photos of Kellogg men and one of the Kellogg founder with a printed signature of the author below it. The book appears to be about the manufacture, use, and testing of linseed oil for various purposes. ; 8vo; 53 pages

There is a faint touch of discoloring at the top tip of the flaps of the jacket. The white background is crisp and clean. No chips or tears. There are some charts, graphs, line drawings in black an white. The book is divided into five parts in a chronology for Early Development, Depression Years, World War II, Postwar, Transformation starting in 1903. There is also a bibliography and index. ; 8vo; 276 pages
