Nansen, Fridtjof FARTHEST NORTH (TWO VOLUMES) Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship : Fram: 1893-1896 and of Fifteen Months; Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Liet. Johansen. New York Harper & Row 1897 First Edition Hardcover This is the First American Edition by Harper & Row published in 1897. In two volumes with 4 maps and many full page illustrations as well as illustrations within the text. The covers are a dark olive-gray cloth with a decorative blind stamped design in gilt, silver, red, and green ink. The title is enclosed in a circle of a rope design, a compass, wreath, and ship lanterns. Pockets in Volume 1 at the front and rear contain a large map and three smaller maps in color. Most of the full page texts are in half-tone, but there are many rich tinted photogravures with tissue overlay. The color illustrations of Nansen's art are subtle and handsome. Many of his art renderings are of sky phenomena or seas and horizons. Some are of animals. The covers are generally clean, there are some color differences in two places on the front cover of one of the volumes. There is some loss of color on the rear of both books - a slightly mottled book from color lift. The top edges are gilt, the fore and bottom edges are untrimmed. The front end papers of both volumes have a former owner note in pencil naming the family that owned the books in 1897 with a note that the books were read 1897.98. There is a chip to the fore edge of the first blank of Volume 1. The interior pages are quite clean and still fresh, however the last (approx) forty pages of Volume 2 have a waterline at the very bottom of the edges near the spine. The glossy paper pages stuck and were separated with some chipping. There are no other marks or writing. Ample size, well inked text. Nansen was an Arctic explorer, Scientist (Geologist Zoologist) , Oceanographer, Artist, Outdoorsman, Writer, Humanitarian. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.. Many of the black and white plates are also by Nansen, including a self-portrait. The book also has photographic illustrations. The maps are in fine condition except for one which has a close tear along a fold line, but in the margin. Lithographic color. They are titled: Preliminary Sketch-map of Franz Josef Land, Preliminary map of the Route of the "Fram".
