London Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans 1843 Hardcover
This is a 10 volume, full leather, hardcover set of poetry by Southey. The books are in full dark blue morocco leather with a title on the spine. Both covers and the spine are blind stamped and partially filled with gilt. The bindings are tight and the condition is mostly near fine with a slight touch of wear to the very top of the spine on some volumes making them very good plus. There is a small dent in the edge on one volume. All page edges are brightly gilt. Volume 1 has a frontispiece of Southey drawn in original pencil and watercolor tint by Henry Edridge. Volumes 2 through 10 have a frontispiece scene by steel engraving. Volumes 1 through 10 have a title page scene by steel engraving. This title page is dated 1837 (Vol 1-3 and 1838 Vol 4-10. The second title page is text only and it has a mix of dates from 1837 to 1843. (There is a total: of 19 steel engravings and one original art portrait frontispiece. ) Each volume has been precisely bound to match. There is an engraved bookplate of Rodman Wanamaker in each volume - color enhanced with a swath of ink over the former owner name on the book plate. There are no other marks or writing. There is evidence of a little too much water for the paper used for the original portrait by Edridge. There are little ripples emanating from the center area with the portrait. Gift condition. These books have been well cared for. The publisher on the first (engraved) title page (with the earlier dates) is Longman, Orme, Brown, Green and Longmans. The publisher on the text title page with the later dates is both (Longman, Orme, Brown, Green and Longmans and some are without Orme. ) ; Vol. 10VOL; 12mo
