2176 Welles, Orson (Foreword) THE SLEEPY LAGOON CASE
Los Angeles, CA Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee 1943 Second Edition Softcover
This is an original of the second (September 1943) printing of this book-pamphlet prepared by the Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee. The covers are stiff paper. The pages are the same tone of paper - beige - evenly distrubuted, but starting to darken slightly from acid in the paper - war time quality. The contents include the title page, copyright information, the Foreword by Welles with a facsimile signature, a collage of newpaper headlines, an Introduction by Marion Bachrach, Council for Pan American Democracy. 17 pages of the event and two pages of summary of facts, a biographical paragraph on each of the youth involved (three pages) , a How-To-Help page, and a plea to win the 'Home Front' war against minority groups. The inside of the back cover contains a partial list of sponsors. Stapled binding. No marks or writing, no wear, except the change in the tone of the paper. Approximately 6 3/4" tall x 5" wide. In August of 1942 a young boy was found dead in the midst of some turf wars. In January of 1943 seventeen youths of American and Mexican birth were convicted of murdering and accused of conspiring to murder or assaulting. Lawyers found that there was good reason to believe they were innocent and found no evidence that they were even present at the death or that they conspired. This booklet gives the story and highlights the diplomatic and media background and the blatant race accusations. Between the indictment and the start of trial a man working for the Foreign Relations Department of the Office of Sheriff of Los Angleles delivered racist reasons that the youths could be guilty. Welles and other Hollywood celebrities involved themselves in the Defense Commitee. The story of the trial was made into a stage play and film (1981) by Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit) . This booklet is original legal defence ephemera. ; 8vo; 30 pages
