260 HOYLE'S IMPROVED EDITION OF THE RULES FOR PLAYING FASHIONABLE GAMES: Containing Copious Directions for Whist, Qudadrille, Piquet, (And 29 Other Games Including Chess, Horse-Racing, and Cocking.
New York, NY W. C. Borrodaile 1830 First American Edition Hardcover
This is a hardcover book in leather with a worn, but interesting spine. The book has two title pages, one with the full list of games (29) , another with a short title in mixed fonts and flourishes. Both are dated 1830. The remainder of the title page that lists all the games is "Together with an Analysis of the Game of Chess, and an Engraved Plate for the Instruction of Beginners. Carefully Revised from the Last London Edition with Several Additions". The Publisher name, date, and address Is the same - W. C. Borrodaile, 1830) . There are two engraved plates with game boards, one is a fold-out. There are several plates that appear to be hand-set. There is a engraved frontispiece of four people at a table each with a fan of cards held in their hands (Engraver - Tuthill) . There is a former owner name in ink at the top of the first title page. The leather covers show wear and a remnant of some tape. The spine is exposed. The cords that form the bands are exposed, the leather from the bottom panel is partially missing, exposing the gatherings (signatures) . The title on the spine is just readable. Other small pieces of the spine leather are missing. Somewhat charming in spite of wear. An old attempt at reinforcement of the interior hinges is suffering from the loss of glue. The page with the frontispiece is partly glued near the hinge. Though the covers are secured, the cords have expanded to form a space gap at the hinge of the front cover. The rear end paper is missing. Some pages have foxing (light brown spots - a chemical reaction within the paper from impurities in the paper or the environment) . The image of the card players serve to create the atmospher in which the book was consulted and add to the charm. Small (5 1/2" x 3" x 1" thick). ; 12mo; 288 pages

271 THE HOLY BIBLE CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS, TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINAL TONGUES; AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED.
New York, NY American Bible Society 1850 Hardcover
This is a bible published in 1850 and bound in wrap around leather with an extension of leather that can be slipped under a strap to hold the cover securely. The book has been well cared for - there is no wear to the handsome leather which is without decornation, but with a title on the spine on gilt - Holy Bible. There is nly minor wear to the rear end paper and the interior is clean, but about 15 pages of the 805 pages (of the Old Testament) and 250 pages (of the New Testament) have been turned to mark a place or slightly bumped. One page in Genesis has a tiny pencil note. The pages have only a few foxing spots - nearly alll the pages are very clean and crisp. The page edges are gilt with a little scuffing, The front end paper has a small faint former owner note and date of 1853. The rear end paper is missing a portion of the paper and there is a touch of stain as if from the glue used in binding. The font is very small. The book is 5 3/4 " tall and 3 1/2" wide, plus 1 3/4" thick. The key feature of this book is the near fine condition of the leather. And perhaps there is interest to a family with an Ohio heritage - on two pages between the Old and New there are two pages for Family Records - five names (Clark and Colby) have been clearnly written with dates - all in the local of Ashtabula Co. Ohio. There is a separate title page for the New Testament as follows: The New Testament of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, translated out of The Original Greek and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. Also dated 1850. There is a very delicate fabric page marker laying between two pages - separated from the binding.; 12mo; 1055 pages

Des Moines, IA Kenyon Printing & Mfg Co. 1909
This is a 1909 Railroad Map of Iowa in delicate condition. It is a large map with many fold lines. Map is approximately 31 1/2" high x 44" wide. There are 23 railroad lines listed in the legend. The map includes county lines and names, towns, survey lines, rivers, and connections points shown by stars. Color is used for some of the railroads and all the connection points. There is simple neat line. The title, Map of Iowa, is shown in fancy script with shadow. The reverse side has an alphabetical listing of towns and cities with population according to the last census. There is a detailed list of connection points and railroads. This map was printed by the Kenyon Printing & Mfg Co. In Des Moines. The last copyright date shown is 1909. The map is only in fair condition. There are some (mostly closed) tears in the margin and at fold lines. There is a closed tear in the Wisconsin area of the map. The face of the map is quite clean. There is soil on the reverse where the two horizontal panels that were unprotected have some soil and darkening on the front and back panel and some fold lines. Repeat, the soil and darkening is on the reverse side of the map, not on the face of the map. There are about two creases of the paper in the margin area. This is a crisp, clean map from 1946 of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad. The sub-title is "Lines East of Mobridge So. Dak. " and "April 1946".
