Van Court First Edition Hardcover This book contains two volumes of The Ladies Garland and Family Magazine bound in one (binding) . Volume 10, July to December 1846 and Volume 11 from January to June, 1847. The book is 3/4 dark brown leather and pebbled cloth covers. The end papers are marbled in a complimentary design. There are eight hand-colored floral and bird engravings and a number of black and white steel engravings and mezzotints throughout. The spine is titled Ladies Garland and Volume 10. There is decorative gilt as well. The covers have some scuffed corners with some breakthrough of the leather. There is a slight loss of cloth at the fore-edges on the book. There is a small label of a Rochester, NY bookstore on the upper corner of the front end paper. There is a name and place (Laurence, KS) in pencil on the first blank page. There is another name in pencil on the title page. There is another or the same Lawrence, KS name on the verso of the end paper in pencil, plus some very, small words in pencil. The binding is tight, Except for the scuffing, the covers are clean. , There are no marks on the end papers other than what has been described. The pages are fairly clean of smudges, with a touch of foxing throughout, a little heavier in spots. There is also some offsetting from the engravings. Most of the hand-colored engravings are covered in a fine tissue paper. There are some ink splatters on the last dozen or so pages. There is a short tear on the first blank page - repaired with Japanese tissue paper. One of the articles is titled "How to Reform a Husband". The quality of the coloring is good to very good, not as fine as in more dedicated floral books from the same time period. There are 192 pages in each volume. Charming. ; Vol. 10/11/2010; 8vo

These books are heavy because of the glossy paper for the pages and may require extra postage if shipped overseas by air. The end papers depict the bird flyways of North America. These books have been well cared for. The dust jackets are plain paper printed with a pictorial of birds in flight. There is some staining and edge wear to the jackets.
