1 (Bergeron, Victor) SMOKEY STOVER Firefighter of Foo
Racine, WI Whitman Publishing Co. 1937 First Edition Hardcover
This is a First Edition hardcover book of the first Smokey Stover books - Fire Fighter of Foo. The book boards (covers) are paper covered and the spine is paper simulated to look like cloth (and in charcoal black) . The original price of 5 cents is in the lower left corner. The number 1010 is on the right. Holman started the Smokey cartoon character strips to run on Sundays for the Chicago Trubune in March of 1937. It went to a daily strip in 1938. This book, the first in the series, was published in 1935. Foo is one of the words he created. The cover is illustrated with a drawing in color of Smokey looking behind him and signalling for the others to follow him. The back cover is a dark green-black. The paper is fragile (not acid free) . There is a title page. It appears that there are supposed to be 9 pages at the rear titled "CUT-UPS FOR GROWN-UPS" Holman invites the owner of the book to do crazy little things some based on the characters in the strip. They are printed on both sides of the page. This former owner took him up on it and did cut some. Two pages being complete. , Two are missing one quarter of the page. One page was torn out and the remnants of that page are present. All the 56 pages of the black and white cartoons are present. The pages in the interior are all in near fine condition (except as satted, the cut-outs which are unrealted to the comic strips on the other pages) The end papers are clean with no marks or writing, but the fragile paper split at the interior hinges, both front and back - it was brittle and inflexible. The binding is in excellent condition. The binding is tight and sturdy. The white background of the front cover is very clean. There is a touch of wear at the corners. All in all, this book must not have been read that many times or passed around. It may have only had one owner. ; 8vo
