H. Munsell and Exploratory Text with Diagrams Illustrating the Application of the System to Work (Cont.
Mittineague, Ma. The Strathmore Paper Company 1921 First Edition Hardcover
This is a handsome, interesting presentation on color using the papers produced by Strathmore Paper Company and the theories and examples of Munsell with the graphic arts of T. M. Cleland, an artist of the period known for those who liked his work designing covers for Fortune magazine. The book Is comprised of 27 pages of illustrated text that explains the color dynamics by principle and applications. There are supposed to be 19 charts using Strathmore papers to study the dynamics of mixing and using colors to an advantage. The plates are fold -outs on various colored Strathmore original paper and examples of integrating art with the paper. This book lacks one plate ( page 11) . Each fold out includes a stub with five 'wheels' of color. One of the wheels is missing in Plate 1, four are present. There is also some remnants of pencil lines by a child, plus a paper cut in the margin on Plate 1. . This book has two beautiful color examples designed by Helen Dryden, an art deco period artist. Ther examples were engraved by Rudolph Ruzicka. The covers are paper covered in a neutral color and a cloth spine in maroon. There is wear at the top and bottom of the spine - cloth wear. The corners of the book are scuffed with paper breaking and worn. The fold of the last plate has an extra crease and a tear at the fold line. There are no other marks or writing or missing pieces. End papers are clean except for a piece of paper pasted in with the name of a former owner neatly written on it. ; 4to

19 Shaw, Henry A HANDBOOK OF THE ART OF ILLUMINATION AS PRACTISED DURING THE MIDDLE AGES With a Description of the Metals, Pigments, and Processes Employed by the Artist At Different Periods
London Bell And Daldy 1866 Hardcover
This a beautifully illustrated book about early manuscript illumination. It is unusual in that color has not been used as usual. Instead the text and illustrations are in light brown ink. It provides a new way of looking at the art of the letters, flourishes, and drawings, though the intention was to produce a more affordable book. The binding and paper used was not lost. The thick book boards are beveled, stamped in an intricate decorative style on the front and rear and slightly on the spine. The front of the book is gilt filled. The title and flourish on the spine is in gilt. There is some chipping to the cloth on the spine and lightly on the corners. A dark brick red-brown color was used for the cloth. The end papers are a dark brown coated paper. There is a small former owner simple plate. The pages are crisp and quite clean except for an occasional page with a smudge. All edges are brightly gilded. The binding is tight. Some Illustrated examples are on full page plates, others are in the text. Some of the artists participating in this work were: James D. Cooper, Mrs. Gould, Miss Bufield, Joseph F. Williams, R. B. Utting. ; 4to; 66 pages
