The bindings are very tight, the books are clean, bright, and crisp, the gilt is bright. The end papers are coated brown paper. The pages are very clean and there are no marks or writing. There are three engraved frontispieces of Eliot and a plate with a portrait of Robert Evans, all with tissue guards. There are other illustrations in black and white. Each volume has a bookplate of the former owner on the front pasted down end paper. Volume 1 contains a gift note pasted in on the front free end paper. The book has a tight binding, green cloth cover with a river scene in black and Egyptian stylized flower and rive scene accents in light blue ink. The title in the spine is in gilt and the cloth has darkened. The rear covers has some spots; the front cover is clean. There is a touch of cloth fraying at the very tips of the cornres. The end paper as a bookplate of George Young Hull who is supposed to be connected to the Hull House in Chicago.
